Sabine Pass Celebrates Grand Opening of Community Center

February 03, 2011

February 3, 2011 – Residents of Sabine Pass, Texas today celebrated the opening of a new multi-purpose community center.  Harold Underwood, president of Port Arthur for Positive Action, and Raymond Jones, president of Golden Pass LNG, handed the “Key to the Sabine Pass Community Center” to Port Arthur Mayor “Bobbie” Prince at the dedication ceremony, followed by a community reception and open house.

“This community center is a welcome addition to Sabine Pass, and I know the local residents are pleased to have a brand new facility for special events,” Mayor Prince said.

The center replaces a facility damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008.  Over the last two years, local residents and officials, Port Arthur for Positive Action and Golden Pass LNG representatives joined together to rebuild a venue for residents to gather and host events.

“The opening of this center is a positive step in our community’s recovery from Hurricane Ike,” said Adam Saunders, Sabine Pass resident and Port Arthur Civic Center director.  “We encourage local residents to drop by and take a tour.  This is our community center to use and enjoy,” he said.

The Sabine Pass Community Center is a multi-purpose facility located at 5262 S. Gulfway Drive.  It is equipped with a natural gas-fired electric generator for emergency situations.  A “spray park” between the community center and the Lions Club Park was also constructed for the enjoyment of the community’s children.  The center will be operated by the City of Port Arthur.

Funding for the Sabine Pass Community Center and spray park was provided by Golden Pass LNG, a local company.  Port Arthur for Positive Action provided administration and oversight for the donation of this facility. The center will be operated and maintained by the City of Port Arthur and will be available for use by the community for special events and celebrations.  For more information, please contact the Port Arthur Civic Center at (409) 985-8801.
